Connecticut In a 4 to 3 decision, the Connecticut Supreme Court overturned the state’s ban on same-sex marriage, allowing legal gay marriage. District of Columbia April 7, 2009, the DC council approved a measure that recognizes the marriages of same-sex couples wed outside of the District. Iowa On April 3, 2009, Iowa became the third US state to allow same-sex marriage. The Supreme Court voted unanimously in favor of gay marriage. Couples can begin exchanging vows on April 24, 2009. New York In a May 29, 2008 directive, New York only recognizes gay marriages from couples married outside of the state. Vermont On April 7, 2009, the state legislature overrode Gov. Jim Douglas’s veto of a bill allowing same-sex couples to marry, making Vermont the first state to allow gay marriage through legislative action.
